In the Central Singapore District:
• 1 in 3 of our residents are aged 50 years and older
• 65% of all rental flats for low-income residents are located here
• 60% of all 3,088 Public Assistance recipients in
Singapore reside in our District
With the highest concentration of vulnerable residents in Singapore, the Central Singapore CDC spends about $1.3 million each year for local schemes to Assist the Needy – in addition to the $26 million the CDC disbursed through national assistance schemes.
Lonely Old Folks
Mr Lee*, 72, is single and lives alone in a one-room flat. During the 2007 financial crisis, he was retrenched from work as an odd-job labourer and could not find a job because of his old
age. For two years, he kept to himself and his savings had barely sustained him until it was eventually depleted. He has been on financial assistance since 2008.
Let’s show our elderly like Mr Lee that they have not been forgotten.
Needy Families
Emily*, 11 and her 10-year old brother, Jason*, come from a single parent family. Their father, who is the sole breadwinner, works as an odd-job labourer and brings home $700 monthly.
Their caregiver is their frail 90-year-old grandmother, as their father is usually not around due to his long working hours.
No child should be deprived of opportunities for a better future. Let’s give these families hope to break out of their poverty cycle.
* Names have been changed to protect their identity
They are only two out of over 6,300 vulnerable residents we have helped in FY2009.
In our fast-paced society, we often forget about those who have been left behind. Your generous support will help make a difference in their lives.
