Question: I am looking to transit career from my current admin job to any other jobs. I am 45 y/o. How do I begin?

Answer:
Dear Michael,

Thank you for writing to us with your question.

Career transition is never an easy process especially when you are at the mid-point of your career lifespan but it’s not an impossible task. Before you embark on a career transition, determine the reasons carefully as to why you want to leave your current admin job. Bear in mind that a career transition would sometimes require one to moderate their expectations in terms of job designation and pay. Without the relevant qualifications and work experiences, a person may be asked to start from a junior level position and work himself up the career ladder.

If you are convinced that a career transition is the right decision for you, then the next step would require you to first know yourself in terms of where your own strengths and interests lie before you refer to the list of sectors or industries that are growing rapidly in Singapore. When you tap on your own strengths and interests, half the battle is already won. The other half would depend on whether you have the appropriate qualifications to take on the job that you have chosen to transit into so that you can settle down quicker and be able to contribute positively. Currently, there are courses that you can consider enrolling to broaden your knowledge.

For example, a person may enjoy interacting, communicating with people and finds he has a knack in handling customer service. He may then wish to consider pursuing a career in the Hospitality Industry and work at a Hotel as a Front Officer Agent. The person may then embark on a WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) Certificate in Hotel & Accommodation Services offered at one of our CET (Continuing Education Training) Centres to prepare himself.
For more details on the types of growing sectors and industries and the relevant qualifications that you can embark to better prepare yourself, please click here.

You are also welcome to visit a Career Centre to speak to a Career Consultant for other career guidance or advice. To find out the Career Centre near you, please click here.

Should you decide to visit the Career Centre, please remember to call the centre beforehand and make an appointment to avoid waiting.

Wishing you the best of luck in your future career endeavours, Michael.
