Youths in Central District Speak Out Against Littering!
The Youth Environmental Guardians of Central Singapore District spoke out against littering at a lively sharing session held on the 3 March 07. The event was co-organised by the Central Singapore CDC and NEA Central Regional Office.
Having undergone an intensive training in public health issues, the Youth Environmental Guardians spent the past month researching “Why Singaporeans Litter and How to Discourage it”. At the same time, they also put together their Action Plan Against Littering, which they are expected to implement in the second half of 2007.
The youths presented their findings in interesting and innovative ways, performing skits and producing videos that feature interviews with their peers and teachers on littering issues. The findings from the students cited lack of civic mindedness in Singaporeans as the main reason for littering.
The judging panel, comprising representatives from Central Singapore CDC, Bishan-Toa Payoh GROs and NEA CRO, eventually crowned a group of exuberant students from Mayflower Secondary School as “Best Group” for having the most comprehensive research and action plan. The group received a trophy from Mayor Zainudin Nordin at Central Singapore 3rd Environmental Regional Workshop on 10 March 2007.
The Central Singapore Youth Environmental Guardians programme is a joint collaboration between Central Singapore CDC and NEA CRO to present a platform for young volunteers in the central district to take on a leadership role in spearheading environmental public health projects in the Central Singapore District.
