Balestier and Jalan Besar Community Trails

Balestier and Jalan Besar are two heritage-rich places that have so much sights, stories and charm to offer!

Organised by Central Singapore CDC, guided walks led by veteran tour guide will introduce the many interesting historical nuggets of Balestier and Jalan Besar, which promised to be an eye and mind opening experience for all, especially our young ……

Many would not probably know how Balestier got its name or that many of the roads located off Balestier Road are named after Burmese cities and towns.Another little-known or forgotten fact is that our very own Singapore movies were once filmed at No. 8 Jalan Ampas, and Chinese revolutionist leader Dr Sun Yet Sen’s Kuomingtang headquarter in Singapore was located here.
Jalan Besar literally means big (or wide) road in Malay is one of the first roads to be built in Singapore. And many of the roads located off Jalan Besar are named after famous World War I battle sites and personalities. To most Singaporeans, Jalan Besar is synonymous with the Jalan Besar Stadium, a landmark in the area for almost a century. Another prominent site which older Singaporeans will recall fondly is the New World which closed in the 1980s. Here you will find one of the best examples of the Singapore shophouses with their intricate and colourful ornamental designs.

The Balestier and Jalan Besar community trails are jointly presented by Central Singapore CDC, National Heritage Board, with the support of Urban Redevelopment Authority, Moulmein CCC and Jalan Besar CCC.
